چکیده

We suggest a new terrain simplification algorithm which is based on known Digital Image Processing compression methods (e.g. DCT , wavelets compression) that was specially adjusted to fit Digital Elevation Models. DEM-images are terrains or elevation maps represented as gray scale images. We investigate the special nature of such terrain-images and design a unique pre-compression process which defines the parameters to guide the image compression. We perform a largescale experiment comparing several terrain simplification methods and conclude that the new suggested terrain simplification algorithm (named ICTS) leads to significantly better compression results, faster runtime, and most importantly, for a given file size it represents the original terrain better than other terrain simplification methods.

Scalable Compression and Rendering of Textured Terrain Data

Several sophisticated methods are available for efficient rendering of out-of-core terrain data sets. For huge data sets the use of preprocessed tiles has proven to be more efficient than continuous levels of detail, since in the latter case the screen space error has to be verified for individual triangles. There are some prevailing problems of these approaches: i) the partitioning and simplif...

Block and Quadtree based Simplification in Tiled Blocks Terrain Algorithms

With the advent of modern graphic processors, rendering a complex terrain in real time was suddenly possible. However the constant struggle between rendering quality and real time performance is still demanding more that we can actually get. Terrains are a prime example of that, the sheer amount of geometry and the constant need to achieve higher standards in image quality are always taking the...

Constrained and Unconstrained Simplification of Image Partitions Encoded with the Method of Transition Points

The encoding of image partitions plays a key role in the overall efficiency of the so-called region-based image coding techniques. Recently, a method based on the novel concept of “transition point” was proposed for the lossless encoding of arbitrary contour maps. This paper addresses the problem of partition simplification in the context of this new encoding method. A new simplification approa...

A Design Overview of a Real-time Terrain Rendering Program

In this report, we provide an overview of the design of a real-time 3D terrain rendering program being developed for educational use. The terrain rendering program has four main viewing stages ranging from solar orbit to low altitude y-by. Each stage has diierent viewing characteristics and data requirements. Hence, diierent rendering techniques , such as pixel mapping and bump mapping, are use...
